As Papua New Guinea (PNG) celebrates 50 years of independence, it provides us with a moment to pause, honour the past, and look ahead to the future we continue to build together. On 16 September 1975, Papua New Guinea formally became independent, marking a transition from Australian administration to sovereign nationhood. Over the decades, PNG has navigated a complex path of high hopes, challenges, resource-led growth, and the ongoing work of transforming natural wealth into sustainable wellbeing.
There are many milestones to celebrate. PNG joined the United Nations shortly after independence and continues to play a strong role in regional and global forums. Culturally, PNG has shown the world the strength of unity within diversity, with more than 800 language groups contributing to a shared national identity. At Zenex Drilling, we recognise that our success is intertwined with the health and progress of the nation around us. Our 30 years of operating in Papua New Guinea have taught us humility, respect, and responsibility. On this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to listening and learning from the communities we work with, upholding the highest standards of safety and environmental care, and supporting the development of local capability across our industry. Papua New Guinea’s greatest strength lies in its people: resilient, diverse and forward-looking. As we celebrate 50 years of independence, we do so with optimism and gratitude. We look to the future with confidence that, together, we can continue to drive progress, create opportunity, and build a nation that honours the past while embracing what lies ahead.
